Mileage and Tax Deductions

Have you ever been on a trip and spent most of the day in your car?  Arriving at the destination is nice, but being cramped in a car is not.  Driving long distances can be boring and most people don't enjoy it.  If this driving is for a vacation, then you can only look forward to the destination.  But for trips that are not recreational, there is a silver lining.

I have great news for those of you who drive every day for your job.  Driving for your job is tax deductible.  Some examples of these vocations are bus drivers, delivery drivers, etc where you use your own car and gas money.  At the end of the year you should know how many miles you have driven specifically for you job.  Then when it is that time of the year for doing taxes, you can deduct those miles.  So if you do a lot of driving, this is something to look into if you want to get some money.

But how do you track your mileage for tax purposes?  For most people, it is relatively simple to track your yearly mileage.  Just check the miles before you leave on your trip and then at the end of your trip.  Use these two numbers to figure out the mileage for that day.  If you keep track of each time and gradually add to it, it is easy to know your yearly mileage.  To make it easier, you can find mileage tracking sheet online to print off for tracking purposes.

However, you could also do things a more modern way.  There are actually some apps available just for this purpose.  Just get an app on your phone and type in the mileage after each trip.  This will automatically keep a total number of miles for you over the year.  If you are one of those people that uses your phone for everything, this is definitely a good option to consider.

It may sound boring and trivial, but try it for a year and it will seem worth it.  Just take a few minutes each day after driving to add up your numbers and it won't take much time out of your day.  If you barely do any driving, then this may not be worth the trouble.  But if you do a lot of driving and pay for gas with your own money, this can help you get some money back.
